The Aston Martin Vanquish was designed in 2001 by Ian Callum and manufactured by Aston Martin; it was Aston Martin's main car until 2007, which was by replaced the DBS. Its climb to fame came after being featured as the official James Bond car in the film ‘Die Another Day’.
The 5.9-litre V12 engine is basically 2 Ford Mondeo V6 engines fixed together; it produces 460bhp and has almost 2 tonnes of car to shift. It is incredibly quick by reaching 62mph in 4.5 seconds and 191mph flat out. The Vanquish S does an extra 50bhp and even though the longer gearing is needed to break 200mph it gives a slower 0-60mph time of 4.8 seconds, this car feels extremely faster on the road. The paddles operating the semi-automatic gearbox are trouble-free to reach but the racing style fly-off handbrake can be awkward to use and takes some getting used to. Both V12 and the V12S are gruesomely thirsty. For the record, the V12 returns 16mpg and the S 14mpg, servicing and group 20 insurance ratings inflict further financial hurt.
The Vanquish has outstanding brakes and a framework that can cope with all that muscle - provided you are competent driving such a powerful car. Nevertheless, there's much more to this car than just sharp handling, it's as much a driver-oriented Grand Tourer as a Sports car. It has an outstanding quick drive but with comfort, the interior has a lovely cosy feel.
The clutch may perhaps demonstrate the weak point on the Vanquish transmission structure. It ought to have snappy gear changes with no hint of slipping, when buying secondhand always check the clutch and gearbox methodically at high speed, with parking and when stationary, also look out for any shudders in first or reverse, overworked and exhausted Vanquish clutches reek far from sweet. Cars built between 10 November 2001 and 9 November 2004 were recalled to have throttle trouble rectified so before buying make sure it has been sorted.
Positive Review: An outstanding engine, invigorating sounds, fabulous to drive, an unbelievable looker with masses of performance, show and a chassis to match.
Cons: Dependability issues, restricted head and legroom and has dated cabin, costly to buy and run, comfort is not a Vanquish strong suit but is OK, and check the clutch and that the gear changes are smooth.
Conclusion of Review: A hard-nosed, high-maintenance, high-tech, high-performance supercar, stay with the V12 not the V12S. Engine is trustworthy but needs vigilant maintenance.
